About this deal

Generally, it must be said that the profession of the tailor was often mocked in the 18 th century, as tailoring was regarded as ‘unmanly’ or ‘women’s work’.

Aside from the equipment and the location on a table top, the rules are pretty much the same as skittles with the maximum theoretical score in one turn being 27 points. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

Being a traditional pub game without any national governing body, variations of equipment and rules abound. Named 'Devil Amongst the Tailors' after a traditional table-top skittles pub game, this unique pub table made of American black walnut and American ash is designed to encourage nomadic workers with enhanced productivity, a sense of belonging and opportunities to interact. Some sources suggest that the game “The devil among the tailors” is named after a riot in 1805, when hundreds of tailors protested against the performance of a play mocking their profession (“ The Tailors: A Tragedy for Warm Weather“).

In the even rarer situation where both players have 1 life left and the next turn is worth 2 lives, both lives must be played out before adjusting the score. The cherry wood was a joy to use again… The tables were made by Sam Foster-Smith, an outstanding craftsman of 35 years’ experience. The body of the table is a 3x2' piece of ply, with the walls and plinth constructed from offcuts of Oak skirting board acquired from a local hardwood timber supplier.

One option is to do what generations of local craftsmen have done before us, and construct your own table as I have ( see below). Instead of a drawer for storing the pins located below the scoring board, I created a pull out Crib Board from a scrap piece of wood which was originally a clock top. Great photos- the first one is certainly British made, but I think the other one may be one of Standard's early Chinese imports. instruments, musicians, gigs, festivals, celtic, accessories, sheet music, concerts, folk, equipment . In the rare example where a two-life turn produces two draws, house rules apply but it is suggested that the next turn simply carries on in the standard two-life fashion. It's only when you get the chance to play on a sturdy board like this that a full appreciation of the skill of the game can be gained. The precise area isn't known but it seemed to be centred around Grantham in Lincolnshire with outreaches as far as Nottingham and Guyhirn, North Cambridgeshire. The Life Guards did their job so effectively that it was likened to a skittle ball ploughing through the skittles. It is also the name of a game in which each player spins a spinning top with a string, to knock down skittles, earning points for doing so. The leather-bound table is similar to Northamptonshire skittles but without a hood and game-play is almost an exact miniature of old English Skittles, played with a single Cheese in which the aim is to topple all the pins with the least number of throws, with five being the maximum allowed.
